Numerology has been around for thousands of years. This early analysis of number was used in Egypt, Chinese “circle of dead”, in Kabbalah, the Hindu Vedas, Gnostics, and even early Christian mysticism.
Back in those earlier times there were ties between numerology and science, but over time that chasm has grown wide, and deep. Today many who practice numerology do refer to it as a science.
The Basics of Numerology
Let’s go over the basic idea behind numerology. You can analyze your birthdate, coming up with a core number that describes why you are here. You can also analyze your name, breaking it down to vowels and consonants, and the combination of the two. Why do so? To translate your name into a core number that translates to a definition of your life path or energy. You can even find out more by “looking between the lines”, finding the most common occurring numbers or numbers that are missing altogether. There is so much to numerology, and so many systems developed over the years, far more than could be covered here today. There are many great books, such as The Complete Book of Numerology.
Is using things like numerology, astrology, tarot, and other methods of divination a way in which we give away our personal power, leaving our lives in the hands of others? Here are a few of the beliefs that have been accepted and debated over the years:
- Chance – the possibility that something, anything could happen
- Fate – events that our outside our control, guided by some supernatural force
- Destiny – something predetermined, like “it’s going to happen no matter what you do”
- It’s in the stars – It’s not about you, it’s the alignment of the planets vs your chart
None of us want to really look at life as something that just “happens to you”, but then there are those times you may feel like the twists and turns in your life are outside of your control. Being conscious, creative beings, you and I will continue to test the waters, exercise our rights, flex those soul-driven muscles that speak out about your passion and purpose. Where does this leave us? Somewhere in the middle.
In all the years I have been counseling, and looking within my own life, I have seen so many times how easy it is for you and I to see things as “this is the way it is”, when in reality it was a perspective, choice, or some kind of protection for a belief. One of the most magical events in my sessions are the shifts in consciousness that frees up a whole warehouse of creative energy into a newly reclaimed space. These shifts can happen in relation to a job, life path, or relationship, just like in the areas of focus using astrology and numerology.
What about those times when it seems like your life is driven? Many of us can describe that feeling, but can’t always pinpoint why. Sure, there are people in our lives that inspires us, and there are events that come along that are worth repeating. But why does anyone choose their interests in life? Could that desire or interest come from something deep within, something that existed long before their human body was created?
Numerology – a roll of the dice?
Do the numbers have an impact on your life and life direction? It could be and will be argued in every way possible. Let’s face it, there are times when you might be in full control, getting everything you asked for and truly want in your life. There may be times when you feel that something is out of reach, or that certain things will happen no matter what. Isn’t that the beauty of life?
We’re all part of a big world in an even bigger universe. How could we accept the influence of sun spots on our planet, and yet deny our relational world? Numerology was developed by many cultures around the world, and each variation shares common links. If seen as a tool, not just for self discovery, but for self validation and focus, numerology can lead you down some interesting paths. It’s not intended to be your secret key to success, but it can be a fun way to see yourself from a different perspective. Finding your intuitive meaning is taking a step toward greater self awareness and deeper self acceptance.
One last thing: what do dice have to do with numerology, after all isn’t numerology typically the numbers 1 through 9? Dice have twelve, so no dice, right? What about the Mayan number system? Intuitively I see a whole different perspective, one of the body and the spirit, and how we integrate the two. This is a great session topic, on the evolution of the soul.
