Many people find themselves attracted to the traditions of the Celts. These traditions go back 2,900 years. Pilgrimages to sacred sites are becoming more and more popular. More and more people are becoming interested in living a lifestyle that is in line with Celtic beliefs, in harmony with nature and with our environment.
Celts and the Maypole
In the old Celtic times, young people would spend the entire night in the woods “A-Maying,” and then dance around the phallic Maypole the next morning. Older married couples were allowed to remove their wedding rings (and the restrictions they imply) for this one night. May morning is a magickal time for wild water (dew, flowing streams, and springs) which is collected and used to bathe in for beauty, or to drink for health.
The Celtic Church
Celtic Christians stressed local spiritual unity rather than universal uniformity. They valued personal sanctity more than doctrinal orthodoxy. They believed in the nearness of the spiritual world. The Celtic Church emphasized anamchara, the “soul friend” – a spiritual mentor and fellow traveller on the true path.
Celtic Spirituality
Everything exists on several simultaneous levels. Human beings can understand things as having three levels: the physical, the spiritual, and the symbolic. Thus, Celtic culture was integrated with nature, and expressed itself through the multiple possibilities of life itself. Celtic religion taught the reincarnation of all individual souls, and the appearance of divine beings on Earth.
