Halloween Fun and Games – Simple Games and Party Treats

What ever happened to the simple games that brought us together and made us laugh? Games unite us, helping us step out of our inhibitions and shy behaviors as we join together with teamwork or even friendly competition. Let’s bring back the spirit of play this Halloween with Fun and Games that are Simple.

These games were discovered in The Country gentleman, Volume 81, published in 1916.

A Jack-o’-lantern Scramble

Out of orange crepe paper cut a hundred or so little jack o’-lanterns, first drawing a sample on stiff paper and marking it off on the crepe paper, which has been folded several times. It will be found that as many as ten may be cut at once.

Hide them under table covers, in back of pictures, in books, anywhere about the rooms, and at a given signal ask everyone to hunt for them, allowing only a few minutes for the scramble, making it very exciting for those who wish to find the greatest number.

Present a suitable prize, a skull stickpin or witch doll, to the one who finds the most, and something equally surprising to the one who succeeds in finding none.

The Old Witch

The head of a witch is drawn upon heavy paper and pinned to the wall—that is, all but her nose. Each one in turn is given a numbered nose, blindfolded and asked to pin it in place, and he who succeeds in placing it nearest its position receives a prize.

We know the game “The Old Witch” by another form and name. What is that game called?

First Tricks then Treats

Of course what is a party and the “tricks” without some treats? Don’t forget to counter-balance your devilishly tasty treats with equally delicious Angels Food Cake. Here are a few ideas:

Pop-corn Fudge

Take two cupfuls of light-brown sugar, one ounce of grated chocolate, one tablespoonful of butter, one cupful of milk, and a pinch of salt. Boil to the soft-ball stage, remove from the fire, and add a teaspoonful of vanilla; then stir in one cupful of crisp chopped pop corn and half a cupful of chopped nut meats. Peanuts or any other nuts may be used. Stir until creamy, and pour onto buttered pans.
