The Meaning of Tao – The Pure and the Turbid

The word Tao goes back to a time close the days of the Christ, originating  In the 1700′s the word Tao was defined as ”way” or “path” but it is also known as a virtue, that which forms all life. Tao is also a doctrine or principle, meaning that it may be unseen but it does have its rules.

The TAO is devoid of form, yet heaven and earth are created and nurtured by it.

The TAO has no will to work, “yet by its way of heaven the moon and sun rejoice to run among the starry seven.

The TAO has no name, but its word is growth, sustaining all.

Yin and Yang = Life

Yin and yang are known by us in a most basic understanding as masculine and feminine. The yin yang symbol shows the the undying relationship between the yin and the yang. Our minds work diligently to give these concepts meaning and definition, but the yin and yang cannot and will not be confined to our need to give form the essence that is life itself.

In the Khing Kang King also known as “The Classic of Purity” it is written:

Now, the Tao shows itself in two forms; the Pure and the Turbid, and has the two conditions of Motion and Rest. Heaven is pure and earth is turbid; heaven moves and earth is at rest. The masculine is pure and the feminine is turbid; the masculine moves and the feminine is still. The radical (purity) descended, and the (turbid) issue flowed abroad; and thus all things were produced.

This TAO interacts or inter-relates within itself. Without the one the other fails to exist.

“The pure is the source of the turbid, and motion is the foundation of rest.”

We seek to find peace, but cannot live purely within it, just as we cannot take one breath and sustain ourselves. Life is movement, and the TAO shows us unresting movement, yet within that movement rest exists.

“If man could always be pure and still, heaven and earth would both revert to non-existence”.
