What is a Labyrinth? It is a form of sacred geometry, some say, a mind-puzzle maze that could hold many levels of meaning and purpose. It’s definition is just as puzzling, with the root found in greek with the meaning of “obscure” but latin roots as well that lead to “as above”.
The Labyrinth of Egypt
One of the most famous labyrinths is found in Egypt, and it is associated with the pyramids and other formations. It was written in Queer Things About Egypt in 1911: “They (the twelve Kings of Egypt) built a labyrinth, a little above the lake of Moeris, situated near that is called the City of Crocodiles—this I have myself seen, and found it greater than can be described. For if any one should add together the buildings and public works of the Greeks, they would be found to have cost less labour and expense than this labyrinth, though the temple in Ephesus is deserving of mention, and also that in Samos. The Pyramids likewise were beyond description, and each of them comparable to many of the great Greek structures. Yet the labyrinth surpasses even the Pyramids. For it has twelve courts enclosed with walls, with doors opposite each other, six facing the north, and six the south, contiguous to one another, and the same exterior wall encloses them. It contains two kinds of rooms, some underground and some above-ground over them, to the number of 3,000, 1,500 of each.”
The connection between Labyrinth and Pyramid
The series of passageways described within the lower chambers of a pyramid could be paralleled in some way to a labyrinth. Was it’s purpose to protect the inner chambers, the areas that held the remains of kings? Could there have been more than a maze to confuse the mortal mind, could there have been some energetic purpose as well to the weaving of the labyrinth?
Sacred Geometry?
What exactly is sacred geometry? We can look at the ruins found around the world, the statues on Easter island, the pyramids, and stonehenge, and wonder what purpose they served. Is the alignment based on the sun or the stars?
The Vatican – A Mysterious Labyrinth In Itself
In the book Queer Things About Egypt the Vatican is also discussed, though only briefly and as a comparison to the labyrinth found in Egypt: “A building of these dimensions would be about twice the size of the Vatican—nearly as long, more than twice as wide; but the Vatican is said to contain no fewer than 13,000 chambers.”
Many wonder of the contents of the Vatican, and few, if anyone person in this point of time, know the extent of sacred holdings are storied in this city within itself.
Labyrinths and Spiritual Journeys
Perhaps we could parallel the twists and turns of a labyrinth to the journey of the soul in physical form. So much is hidden to us, yet we continue our journey, always seeking the answers, always seeking some unseen wordless destination.
Labyrinth of the World
“Nevzali jsme ssebou Nic, po vaem veta
Jen bibli Kralickou Labyrint sveta.”
“Nothing have we taken with us, Everything is lost;
We have but our bible of Kralice, Our ‘ Labyrinth of the World.’”
—Song of the Bohemian Exiles.
