The Dinosaur and the Hummingbird
There’s a story about the dinosaur and the hummingbird. When the dinosaur walked the earth, as a giant, they had tiny brains but a big spirit. This combination did not likely support one another, for the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The dinosaur spirit was bold but did not have the intellect to handle such a big body. So the spirit was given a new vessel for it’s earthly adventures, and the hummingbird was created.
We Don’t Live as Giants
There is a reason we do not live as giants, in any sense. Our world is relational, and success should not be measured on how much we own. Whoever dies with the most toys dies nonetheless.
Diversity Builds Life
In the area of food we have diversity. The directive in Ireland to focus on one variety of potato took its toll, and there was a great potato famine. We are here to make mistakes and then learn from those mistakes, so why do we have such a strong movement in this country to wipe out the diversity of our seed and create hybrids that will not reproduce? The giant always consumes far more than any one could give it.
Giants Consume More Than Their Share
The same applies to business, for as the giants grow they consume whatever is further down the food chain. Biodiversity, whole, natural, real, independent, free-thinking, and of course free-will. We have the right to choose, and the more choices we have the more those businesses will fight to give us quality and value.
How do we take giant steps in business that are not at the expense of everything around us? Through cooperation, alliances, and innovation.
We Live By Design
We live by design, and we do not have to be bigger or stronger. Turn that desire inward, and you build inner strength, stronger ability, and deeper passion. It is not the count but the quality that matters.
