One of the most controversial aspects of the current religious world involves that of personal prophecy. The ultimate aim of this activity is for individuals to comprehend and thus carry out the specific purpose that God has for them in this life. Edification and exhortation of the spirit are said to be just some of the successful outcomes of this activity.
Human Trial and Error
As human beings we are all naturally prone to error and can be fundamentally limited with regards to the language we have at our disposal. This is where this practice is said to come in, as God makes things clearer through his speaking to us. The biggest criticism of this area of the Church is that it is far too spiritual, almost new age in fact, but it has been argued by many that the Bible is explicit regarding its importance.
Prophetic Words
Nonetheless there exist many tales within the Bible which appear to give credence to this practice. The first recording is found when God revealed to Adam that he will perish after he had taken fruit from the forbidden tree. In the New Testament, there are similar examples such as, for example when Joseph and Mary were known to have received ‘prophetic words’ whilst they were in the temple.
Speaking in Tongues
Basically this practice is similar in kind to that of speaking in tongues, in the sense that it largely benefits the individual rather than the whole Church. It can actually take on many forms. For some people the words seem to literally bubble up from within, while for others it produces a more visionary type effect.
This practice, however, is mean’t not for teaching purposes. Rather it is quite strictly restricted to individual guidance. In actual fact very little teaching (if any) takes place during such sessions.
Besides encountering a prophet or one who is said to have the gift of prophecy there exist other ways of receiving the word. This can include receiving through dreams or even through visions. Likewise carrying out a regular prayer program and a thorough and disciplined study of the scriptures can all lead to obtaining the gift of receiving.
A Gift from God
Personal prophecy then is said to be a gift from God that will help individuals to flourish and define themselves throughout their lives. It is claimed that it is actually an indispensable tool and that in reality no period of history has been without it.
