The main purpose of yoga is to open up the seven chakras so that energy can flow more freely between the physical body and the etheric body, in preparation for the soul’s transcendence from the physical plane to the astral plane. The word “chakra” translates from the Sanskrit as “wheel that turns.” Chakras are spinning vortices or portals between the material body and the subtle body. They are the organs of the etheric body and are awakened centers of the astral cerebrospinal axis, the central channel connecting the root chakra at the base with the crown chakra at the top of the head.
Nadis and Subtle Body
There are a total of 72,000 nadis throughout the astral body but the three most important are the sushumna, ida, and pingala. The purpose of the nadi is to transport prana or astral “life force” energy. Prana is also known as chi. In comparison, you could say that the veins and arteries of the physical body are much like the nadis of the subtle body. Just as blood and oxygen of the corporeal body sustains its life, chi sustains the life of the ethereal body.
Subtle Body and Yin
Serpentine ida nadi represents the feminine, yin element, and right-brain that is associated with negative, lunar energy. It is connected with the left nostril and has a cooling and soothing effect on the physical body. It is cold and wet, associated with the moon and the alchemic mercury.
Serpentine pingala nadi represents the masculine, yang element, and left-brain that is associated with positive, solar energy. It is red, hot, and dry, and likened to the sun and alchemic sulphur. It is connected with the right nostril and has a warming and exhilarating effect on the body.
Subtle Body – Yang Energy
Kundalini shakti translates from the ancient Sanskrit as “coiled force of empowerment.” The first chakra is called muladhara which translates from Sanskrit as “root support.” It is at the place of this root chakra where the kundalini is coiled three and one half times and there it remains dormant in most humans. This root stage of consciousness is where the current human species has resided for the last 5,000 years. During this span of time, a very small number of humans have experienced a kundalini rising. The few that did were known as mystics, sages, shamans, yogis, or enlightened masters.
Nadis and Kundalini
In the last century, however, and more so in the last few decades, there has been a much broader demographic of people from across the globe who have reported a personal kundalini arousal. Once the kundalini shakti becomes awakened, it travels to the top of the head via the spinal cord, activating, spinning, balancing, and clearing the other six chakras along the way.
