NLP and Being Assertive

Being assertive is vitally important for anyone who wants to have an enjoyable and successful life. Assertiveness is the ability to stand up for what we believe in, what we want and who we are. Assertiveness helps individuals show that they aren’t a pushover and that they are willing to apply themselves to whatever it is they are doing. Employers look for assertiveness as a quality in their employees as it tells them the person will apply themselves.

What you believe in

People are helped to share and express what they believe in to others confidently through assertiveness. If people don’t express their beliefs then they leave themselves open to pressure from other people pushing them into other directions. Morals are another area where this is the case. If people have morals but they don’t express them then others might attempt to push them into things they don’t want to do.

The Ability to say “No”

Assertiveness gives people the ability to say no when they feel they need too without feeling guilty for doing so. In some cases someone might need to be assertive and say no because they don’t have the time or the means to fulfil what they are being asked for. In other cases they might need to be assertive and say no because they don’t agree with what they’re being asked to do or they know that it’s wrong.

Whilst it’s important to say no with assertiveness it’s also important to say yes and to be able to speak up for what you want. People aren’t likely to give you what it is you want if you don’t ask for it. Whether it is something you believe you deserve or something you are owed, being assertive will help you get it.

It’s not being Pushy

Some people don’t apply themselves and mask their assertiveness because they believe it might be mistaken for overconfidence or being pushy but this is a misconception. Whilst being assertive is important what is equally important is controlling it so that it doesn’t become aggression or cockiness, if a person can manage that then they will benefit greatly from their assertiveness.
