So much is written about Friday the 13th, and while we say we’re not superstitious there are certain things we will not do or give our attention to because of a sense of discomfort. Superstitions tie together some action to an outcome, and wrap them neatly within a belief that one thing leads to another.
Beliefs and Practices
We’ve seen silly little beliefs and practices remaining in our world, like breaking a wishbone and getting the bigger half: time to make your wish, it’s now destined to come true! Find a four-leaf clover. In fact I did find my first four-leaf clover of this year just yesterday, and I gifted it to one of my walking companions. This became the topic of our conversation for the remainder of the walk.
A Little Luck
Is luck such a welcomed thing? What thought follows? ”I could use some luck” could indicate a belief that somewhere within there is an empty space, a lack. Superstitions are the same, riding on a belief that we could possibly make a wrong choice that could bring disastrous results. It’s true, we don’t know or see everything, and we cannot anticipate every little possibility, but most of the time we could honestly make the statement, “I did the best I could with what I had to work with at the time“.
Many Fridays have come and gone. Many instances have occurred throughout the history of this planet when the day we call Friday and the 13th day in the calendar come together. The superstition of Friday the 13th is based on one event, and it just so happens that it occurred on that day. How can we label the day itself as being unlucky?
Lucky Number 13
In the Mayan culture the number 13 is not scary or unlucky. Thirteen is a magical number. It is the gateway between who we are today, taking all the wisdom and creativity we’ve built into that next step. The number 13 is an opportunity ready to happen.
Superstitions
Superstitions and signs of good luck are not childish, old world, or our imagination. Our superstitions have all been based upon experiences and our attempts to learn how to make the right choices. The stories associated help to make those ideas stick within our minds, and the stories often become more predominant than the facts that they are founded on.
Overall, isn’t it great that we have this ability to put two-and-two together and learn from cause and effect? The superstition that it is bad luck to walk under a ladder may seem detached, but the logic is good that the odds of something falling on you are higher walking under that ladder than they are walking around it.
Knowing Our Intent
Friday the 13th: a time for magic, a day when things go wrong, or just another day? Let’s toss another concept onto the fire: in numerology, add the month 5 to the day 13, and the year 2011 and we get 2029. Add 2 + 0 + 2 + 9 and we get 13. Yikes! What does that mean?
I’m not one who settles for “just another day” or pre-destined days. I walk into this day knowing my intentions are strong, my spirit is willing to give it my everything, and I’m ready for the world to support my desired outcome. Things usually go wrong when some part of me doesn’t fully support my current direction, or when I doubt my own abilities. There is far more power within to guide me in any direction than what typically takes place on the outside, and it’s said that the true test of our nature is seen in how we respond to the events in our life. Still it can be fun to read the signs and bring a little more conscious attention into reaffirming our intent.
Have a great Friday everyone, let’s bring a little of that Mayan Magic into action!
