Sufferers are caused by obsessive compulsive disorder which is a fairly common disorder to experience unwanted and unexpected obsessive and of course impulsive thoughts. The individual is caused by thoughts to feel urges and impulses which tell them to do certain things; this is often brought on by anxiety. Although it is thought that the main cause of OCD is anxiety, there are many other factors which can have an effect.
It is believed OCD can be passed on genetically from someone with a disorder similar to OCD. This could include a number of disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder which is over concern about a certain element of appearance or hypochondriasis where the individual fears having some sort of disease and always suspects they do despite tests by medical professionals to confirm that they don’t.
Someone with OCD is more likely to have another person in the family who also has the disorder by four times more than someone who doesn’t. No specific genes which can cause OCD to be passed on have been identified though. Tourettes or tics are other conditions which might possibly cause OCD to be passed down.
OCD can come from an infection of the throat however it is a rare case. The body’s infection fighting system is what fights off an infection known as strep throat however sometimes this can damage a group of nerve cells in the brain resulting in OCD symptoms. The symptoms do subside fairly quickly afterwards but they can also start very quickly too.
Another possible cause of OCD is brain abnormalities. It has been revealed through brain scans of people who suffer from OCD that in certain parts of the brain there are clear levels of increased activity and high blood flow. Emotions and how people respond to emotions too are managed by the area of the brain which is affected. The disorder can sometimes be helped with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or cognitive behavioural therapy.
