The relationship we have at Easter time with Easter morning hunts where children seek out bunnies and eggs is an old tradition. Back in the late 1800′s there was a woman in New York City called the “Rabbit Woman”. She came to the U.S. from a well-to-do family, but found herself having to earn her own living, and so she sold toys and rabbits, and things for merriment and the entertainment of children.
The Easter Egg Hunt
The busiest time for her, it was said, was Easter time. Acording to the Rabbit Woman the connection between the rabbit and Easter began in Germany. Children would rise early Easter morning to hunt or the “hare’s nest”. This nest could be found most anywhere inside or outside. The hare could be a sugar bunny, or made from paper-mache, but it could also be a live bunny. Surrounding the bunny and its nest were eggs, said to be left the night before.
Bunny Tails Tales
The Rabbit Woman shared her story of the rabbits she kept to sell to her customers. They resided in a box inside her New York City apartment, and this box was covered over with wire to keep the bunnies within. One evening she went out, and when she returned she found the cover was part way off the box. All the rabbits, a dozen or more, all sat in a row on the top. “It struck me as comical”, the Rabbit Woman shared, “I sat down and laughed, wishing my little customers who buy my bunnies could have seen them there, like a lot of well-drilled soldiers all draw up in a row”.
