Using Spells – Does It Compromise Our Free Will?

An Intuitive Meaning reader recently sent me an email asking about love spells from the perspective of free will. Could something that changes the free will of a person be considered “white” magic, or is that tampering with someone’s free will? There are many things to consider with that question.

From Subtle Messages to Brainwashing

Technically we (as people) do many things throughout the day to influence others. We dress a certain way, wear perfumes or cologne, give that suggestive glance or welcoming smile. We’re also bombarded with “suggestions” constantly through advertisements, politics and media to think a certain way or buy some product. Could we say that our free will is compromised?

Our Acts as Spirit

There is really little difference between our “day to day” world or physical life and the intuitive or spiritual aspect of ourselves. In fact our world could be called a reflection of our spiritual and intuitive sides. There is all around us what we perceived as both good and bad. Most of us focus on doing what is “right”, living a healthy happy life, and doing right by others.

Desires Turned To Rituals – Karma?

Karma, in simple terms, means that our actions will return to us, one way or another. A person doesn’t need to think in terms of paying off karma from another lifetime, we see karma, cause and effect, all around us. Act a certain way and you will get certain results. Believe in something strongly enough and you will see the world in that way, consciously or unconsciously. How often do you see someone, or feel within yourself, remorse for something you did or said? Karma is a part of life, but so is reaction and forgiveness. Karma goes both ways.

Yin Yang and Free Will

The efforts anyone makes to get the world or even just one person to see things “their way” takes a lot of time and energy. This practice of influence has been around since the beginning of time whether we call it manipulation, using force, advertising, or yang action. We cannot help but use our yang energy, and we must in order to live.

We have the other side, too, the yin side. This side is internal, reflective, the origin of every that the yang side of us brings into action. This is where we find intentions, the thoughts we live by, and the beliefs that we adhere to throughout our lifetime.

Living with Integrity

Is all this a question about free will, or about integrity? I believe it is truly about the integrity or balance of our thoughts and actions. It is showing to the world that our yin side and yang side are working together, sharing the same goals, values, and purpose.

I had a teacher for a short time in the first grade who took a strong interest in me, and expressed her love through encouragement and sharing her inner joy through her eyes and her smile. That person gave everything she had to create a safe, welcoming environment for me to grow within. To this day I remember that teacher, she influenced my life so powerfully with her actions because she lived what she believed within her heart. Love is a powerful alchemy, and she expressed her love through her work as a teacher. Her influence remained strong because of her balance and integrity, and I was drawn to her, mesmerized, and strongly influenced, by both her acts and her intent. Talk about powerful “magic”.

Finding Balance

I cannot answer the question for you, whether or not a ritual is good or bad. I think we all agree that whatever we do is karmic, that what we do always returns to us. To ask about another’s free will is a reflection of how strongly we value our own free will.

We interpret our world, and decide for ourselves what our actions and the acts of those around us mean to us, and whether or not we will respond. Our definitions of what is right or wrong runs deep, and flows into the world around us. We have our free will to respond to that driver who cuts us off as we choose, whether we respond with “life sucks”, road rage, or simply not allowing the acts of another to be of any importance to us. Our time here on earth is finite, why waste our energy in something that does not support us? Then again, sometimes we have to fall down to remind ourselves that we can stand up again.

Creating Our Own Alchemy

Allow me to share with you that I do not practice white magic or any of the magic related acts, so I do not speak as an expert those areas. But I do practice “rituals” that are intended to influence others, just like that teacher I had so many years back. I create intentions, take time to meditate so that I more clearly see and heal myself, offer prayers, share a different viewpoint with others so they can see themselves more clearly from a loving perspective. These are all powerful “tools” just like anything practiced. We all influence our world, whether through our acts or lack of action: both can be powerful statements. Is is always our choice whether or not to be more conscious of ourselves, our thoughts and our actions. Knowing ourselves and the effect we have on those around us gives us both a stronger sense of our own free will as well as greater control in our world.
