We all face tragedy at some point within our lives, whether it is the loss of a loved one sending ripples of sadness through the family, or a more widespread disaster that affects a community, country, or even the world.
Our ability to communicate
Today with our ability to communicate almost instantly around the world the spread of news is greater than ever before in history. Take for example the recent earthquake in Japan with reported magnitude ranging from 7.9 to 8.9, making this earthquake a cause for great concern.
The idea that a tragedy for one ripples out to those around us can be seen on many levels, whether it is emotional, mental, or physical. We often feel more than is expressed with words. Our ability to feel and perceive on an emotional and spiritual level is also expressed in the physical world. The quake in Japan has sent a warning signal to surrounding areas, and the fear of a tsunami in Hawaii touches the lives of many. We should, with our knowledge today, understand that harm on one level is often felt on many levels, and in ways that we may not have imagined. Our actions, like deforestation, hydrogenated foods and artificial ingredients, and genetic engineering of our foods will indeed ripple out in ways that will change our world just like a tsunami. Our choices, with acts as tiny as a few reactive words, could change a lifetime.
Is it a sign?
We know this fear of disaster all too well in our lifetime, for this is not the first disaster of this kind in recent times. The media is all too quick to take these events to the airwaves, emphasizing their message with comparisons and statistics. While they do not explicitly speak out of the concepts of doomsday, prophecy, or predictions the question could be asked: how many of us deepen the sadness and fear brought on by these events with thoughts like, “Is this a sign of the times?”, or “Are those predictions coming true?”.
Predictions about our “time” are found in the Mayan Tzolkin calendar and talk of 2012, as well as from sources like Nostradamus, even Edgar Cayce. Debate continues on whether or not the predictions by those who had no living connection to these times are indeed accurate predictions. Our creative minds can create parallels and similarities, and weave a story that can easily take hold when shared with others. Look around us, how many fables, tales, and theories line our bookshelves?
Reactive or responsive?
Is this recent event a sign of the times? If we stand here and speak out from this perspective, just how much power do we have to respond? Doesn’t this place far too much emphasis on some power that is greater than we are, and leave the doors open to judgment? Our focus and our energies are more wisely used in our ability to make things better, giving support, offering prayers, and taking steps to prevent further harm. We all possess the ability to step beyond the knee-jerk reaction and be responsive. It is within our power to make this world, with its mix of trials and tribulations, the best world it can be.
