Essential Oils, Aromatherapy & Soy Wax

In recent years, both the use of soy wax and the practice of aromatherapy have grown by leaps and bounds. So why not unite the two? Welcome to the world of aromatherapy soy candles. Before the invention of soy wax in 1992, there was really no all-natural and practical way of creating an aromatherapy candle. Since then, and especially in the last few years, the use of aromatherapy soy candles has become almost commonplace.

You might ask why it is so important to use soy wax for aromatherapy candles as opposed to the traditional paraffin.

First let’s define aromatherapy. In this case, it is the use of essential oils to aid in physical, psychological and emotional well being. More specifically, it is the use of the aroma of these essential oils. When you combine these powerful aromas with non-natural chemicals, you are no longer inhaling the pure aroma of the essential oils.

When you use paraffin as a medium to disperse these essential oils into the air, you are also dispersing the chemicals contained in the paraffin itself, which many consider to be harmful. The petro-carbon soot produced from paraffin and the carcinogens that are released into the air disrupt the healing properties of these delicate essential oils, in effect, contaminating the aroma.

When you use soy wax with aromatherapy candles, it does not release harmful petro-carbon soot into the air like paraffin. Unlike paraffin, soy is all natural and burn completely clean. The burning of the soy wax does not interfere with the natural healing properties of the essential oils since it is a clean burning wax.

When compared to paraffin wax, soy wax is thought to have a much better and more consistent scent throw. Scent throw is how the fragrance is dispersed into the air, how much is dispersed, how consistent the dispersion, and a few other factors. The scent throw of paraffin may be stronger at times but the scent throw of soy wax is much more consistent and the aroma is said to last longer in the air with soy wax is used instead of paraffin wax.

A major factor that affects the scent throw of a particular wax is the melting point and temperature at which that wax burns. Paraffin wax burns much hotter than soy wax – up to 30 to 40 degrees hotter. This means that the fragrance is released more quickly. However, because of the cooler burning temperature of soy wax, the aroma is released slowly and consistently and stays in the air longer than it does with paraffin.

So why burn aromatherapy soy candles?

1. Soy wax burns clean and therefore does not interfere with the healing properties of the essential oils being released into the air.

2. As compared to other waxes, soy wax burns much cooler. Because of this, it has a more consistent scent throw for a longer lasting experience.

3. Although soy wax is a bit more expensive than paraffin, it ends up being more cost effective since it has a much longer burning time.
