Ancient Food Found In Chinese Cemetary
There was a recent discovery of food buried in Chinese cemetary. The food, dating back 2,500 years, consisted of long noodles, meat, porridge, and cakes. This information was shared with us in an article in the Journal of Archaelogical Science.
These foods give some idea as to the resourcefulness of the people at that time. The cakes were cooked in a oven-like hearth. This ability to bake bread was also shared by the Egyptians in that same time period.
Today those skills may seem simplistic, but looking back at the resources available, we could recognize the movement from eating foods as they are found to the more sophisticated skills of transforming foods into more usable forms such as grinding using grindstones as well as baking. The discovery of this food some 2,500 years later also shows us the ability to preserve foods. As we know, the Egyptians knew about other types of preservation, looking at their burial rituals.
One other point noted in this study is that the mummies found were mostly typical of Europeans, with light-colored hair, deep-set eyes and protruding noses. In this desert area betweeen east and central China they also found arrows, bows, saddles, leather chest protection, knives, boots, even a sweater.
Food for the Afterlife?
The question that still stands out is not that the food was found, which is in itself a wonder, but why it was found in a cemetary. Is there some meaning to this discovery? Did the ancient Chinese believe in the afterlife, much like the Egyptians, leaving food and other supplies for the next life?
Some may look at these old traditions as superstitions that sprang forth from primative minds, but is that necessarily true? Do we have a case of unearthing the primative ways we have outgrown, or do we have a case of rediscovering the wisdom of cultures from days past?
