Prophetic ministries are largely misunderstood among the churches of Christ today. We can see the Lord moving mightily in some places and that He is pouring out genuine prophetic anointing on His people. Many powerful prophetic ministries are born and ministers being raised up. In response to that, some attend every conference they can attend hoping for a share of anointing for themselves. Others totally reject the phenomenon due to wrong concepts and confusions.
When we see people like Benny Hinn speaking powerful prophecies or doing supernatural healings on the stage, it is easy for us to think that the person on stage is more special and holy than everyone else. Some might fall into the trap to taking whatever they say to be as valid as the scripture without testing. Some might think that since God anoints this person so powerfully, he must be uniquely godly and all his doctrine must be right. One of the judges of Israel, Samson is a clear counter example. He had obvious moral problems, but still the Holy Spirit anointed him powerfully.
There are other problems of believing that a man who is used by God with real prophetic anointing must have completely accurate doctrine and flawless character. Some reject any servants of the Lord once they see a mistake in their teaching or character and conclude that the demonstration of power was not from God. And if the power was not from God, then there is only one possible source left. This becomes a very serious accuse and offends many people. Corinthians is the example against this belief. They are famous for their spiritual giftings but they are also well known for their carnality.
Salvation is solely base on the grace of God and through faith we accept it. The Lord gives spiritual gifts in the same way. The Lord distributes Holy Spiritual gifts according to His good sovereignty. No one is worthy of receiving any anointing no matter how much one does. No one is able to earn the gifts with works. God does not give someone the anointing of the Holy Spirit to signify a person’s maturity or godliness.
No one could speak perfect word of God because we are all sinners and we could only prophecy in part. Therefore, we must test every prophecy. A well established prophet could tell something not from God, while a broken man with obvious problem could also possibly speak a prophecy from God. But still, we must be aware of false prophets who take people astray.
The Lord can also choose to anoint you with spiritual gift. If that happens, praise Jesus’ good name and stay humble, because He alone is worthy of all praise. We are sinners and none of us is perfect. But the Lord can still use us mightily if we obey.
When a person is anointed, he was anointed for the common good of the church and not for his own good. The person must bear this in his mind in his ministry. The Holy Spirit gives us gifts so that we could be the gifts for others.
