Our Path: Taking The Road Less Traveled

Many a story has been told over time of the path we choose.  These stories are often told in a way that could be interpreted by the reader or gentle listener much like the light reaches into a prism: bursting off into so many directions, with no one direction any more true than another.  The prism does not discriminate, it only reflects.

A few years back a poet by the name of William Pritchard shared with the world his thoughts, wrapped so neatly in a poetic package:

Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

How much meaning could be found is so few words? This is the richness of poetry, telling a tale that could fuel days, even months of discussion and debate yet the story itself is told in a fragment of time.  Nowadays, taken out of its original context, we could ask, “What is its meaning?”, and the answer could be found to be identical to the question.

We’ve become accustom these days to the words, “being on our path”, yet how often do we know what that means?  Is it only a question, intended to push us out of our cozy nest of mental comfort into a frenzied world of determining the right path, even without the opportunity to see what lies ahead?  In a world that makes no claim of great psychic ability we are still expected to predict the outcome of any choice we make.  It doesn’t matter if the topic lies within the choice of roast beef over turkey, or the choice of a relationship that could potentially span a lifetime.  We are taught, indirectly, to gaze within the crystal ball of our own consciousness, and to make choices.

This is the beauty of this poem, gifted to the world by the poet William H. Pritchard nearly a hundred years ago.  The world was so much different at that time from the world we know today.  Isn’t it wonderful that today more than ever our lives are filled with such opportunity: to delve within our own thoughts, and find that we have so many chances to make a choice?  Do we turn to what might seem to be the easier path, or do we take the road less traveled?
