Every year we cycle through the seasons, going from the cold, darker days of winter to the summer intensity of growth and longer light. It’s as if the world on which we live celebrates in great abundance during this time we live in, at least in the northern hemisphere. It won’t be long before the southern half enters its on celebration, making it a year-round party so full of life.
We individually love to celebrate our own life cycles, bringing focus to our birthdays each year. What is the meaning of this celebration? It must go far beyond the receiving of gifts or the special foods we use to celebrate.
In the Mayan calendar, a calendar I am personally quite fond of, there are 260 days of celebration that cycle in and out in various combinations of 20 concepts in 13 perspectives, each holding what I see intuitively a special meaning. Let’s linger on that word for a moment: special. Shouldn’t life be looked upon in this way, as a celebration each and every day? Of course we don’t do that, celebrate each day, and we justify it as taking away the “special”. Maybe that is why the Mayan calendar holds a different meaning for each and every day, adding up to 260 days, which surprisingly (or not) are right around the number of days it takes from conception to birth date for one special new person to enter the world.
I share this topic with you today because of its appearance as an overall theme of the messages I have talked about in the Mayan Daily Insights. Each day is another celebration yet each from its own perspective, and this all goes on tucked quietly within our day-to-day world.
This week I suggest we bring this celebration more fully into the light, and we have help in doing just that. Our summer sun burns bright, and the full moon of last night illuminates us even in our darkness. I personally celebrate my own life this week with my birthday approaching. What is a birthday, anyway, and why do we celebrate them? It is a time of celebrating the individual, as well as a time to celebrate the greater gift of life.
