Finding Meaning in the Shaman Divination Drum

Intuitive Meaning: Posted by Webmaster

In this video we see and hear what appears to be simply the beating upon a drum. See the two little seed pods bouncing on the drum? Ancient cultures have used this method as a form of divination, predicting the future events for both individuals and tribes by interpreting the movement of these special seed pods upon the drum. The outer edge of the drum, as well as the center, contain drawings, each with their own special intuitive meaning. The shaman used this drumming technique to move the pods or stones across the drum, then intuitively or spiritually interpreted the movement and conveyed its meaning to the people.

This drum reminds me of the Saami drum, a sacred divination and spiritual tool used by the scandinavian people who’s culture was nearly wiped out by the intrusive beliefs of “civilized people”. In current days culture and government have come together to work on healing the damages done in the past, and the culture and beliefs of the Saami are now honored.

  1. instead of tiny pebbles to make the vibrating sound, put small bones on two strings across the drums back. this is what Cree people do in northern Canada.

Out of curiosity, are those runes around the drum? It looks like Hagalaz, Jera, and Gebo are on it. Wonderful drum just the same! Nice demonstration of Sampi divination (I assume it is Sampi as one of the tags of the video says it is).

  3. hialoakapua says:

Yes, those are runes around the drum. I trained with Ailo Gaup for my shamanic practice and learned some of the ways of the Sampi people… I have also visited Sweden and Norway ……

  4. Looks like Mexican Jumping Beans. They tell the Tale of Good, Good, Good – Good Vibrations. Reminds me of a friend who once said: “I WANNA ROCK!!!” So I pelted him in the head with a stone! Yah Ta Hey!

  5. MageDalTheos says:

I find it really cool that you use the techniques of different cultures to form a grander scope of shamanism. There aren’t many in the modern way of thinking that do this because they want to limit it to one culture or just say they are wiccan/pagan.

How long have you been training as a shaman? Do you know any of the fire methods to gain power in dreams and nature?

  6. Always nice to see the tradition of “my” ancients (I’m racially swedish, norse religion had shamanic elements to it in the pre-christian society that the privileged practiced, as far as I know) still being around somewhere! =)

Also, this was shown in school one time during a class on religion that focused on shamanism worldwide and pre-christianized europe.
