Most people have occasional nightmares. They can be terrifying, often involving monsters, dangerous animals, or simply a crippling feeling of fear. For some people, recurring nightmares can cause more serious problems. They can make sleep seem like something to avoid rather than a relaxing end to the day, and they can even reflect serious trauma or repeat bad experiences from real life.
Many people are interested in dreams interpretation, and it is often a particularly horrible nightmare that stimulates this interest. Nightmares often seem to be more memorable than other dreams, perhaps because their effect is so much more intense, or because it is possible for a particularly bad dream to force the dreamer suddenly back into consciousness in a way that ordinary dreams cannot. Waking suddenly like this can make it much easier to remember what was being dreamed about just before it happened. This is in fact the definition of a nightmare. It is a bad dream that is enough to shock you into waking.
Although most people remain unaware of the fact, bad dreams are usually more common than good ones. When people begin to record their dreams, they generally find that most of the ones that they write down or speak about are bad ones. Scientists who have performed experiments involving waking people up during REM sleep so that they would remember what they had been dreaming about found that about three quarters of the dreams were bad.
The memorable and striking nature of nightmares and their high frequency makes them a good subject for dreams interpretation. Common elements in nightmares include being chased, falling, coming to work or school naked or unprepared for an important event, and losing teeth.
Many nightmares relate to pressures and stresses that are troubling the dreamer’s mind. The dreams interpretation can provide clues as to what is worrying the dreamer and what they are subconsciously afraid of. Being chased in a dream can often be a sign of feeling under pressure, or feeling threatened by something or something in real life. Dreaming about teeth falling out is usually a sign of stress. It may relate to the fact that people who are feeling tense and worried can grind their teeth together while they are sleeping. Dreams that feature being naked in public or arriving for an exam or similar event without having prepared for it usually relates to some sort of stress that involves work or school. These dreams often occur when there is a real exam to be taken, for example.
Falling dreams are a particularly interesting case since there are two elements to their interpretation. One is the possible psychological meaning. The dreamer may be feeling anxious about something, or as if they have lost control over a particular situation or over their life in general. The other explanation is physiological. When the body falls asleep it undergoes many of the same changes that can occur during death. It becomes colder and the mind loses control over it. The breathing becomes shallower and the heart rate slows. Occasionally this can trick the body into believing that something is wrong, causing it to send a jolt through the body in an attempt to stay alive, waking the person up.
