My space: No, this is not an article about a website, we’re actually talking about the invisible aura of energy around you called your “space”. Your space is your energetic territory, the collection of your physical experience: emotions, events, perceptions, knowing, communication, feelings, and personal power. Your personal space is unique to you, but not always your own.
Sometimes our personal space becomes mixed together with the energies and opinions of others. We’re not always masters of our own universe, and sometimes we bring in the energy of others to support us or guide us in the direction we think we want to go. At some point we have to find our own way, and make choices based upon what is right for our own personal journey in life. This is when learning how to set boundaries in your personal life becomes a valuable tool.
It’s easy to feel when there is an infringement on our personal boundaries, especially when that infringement tries to take us someplace we don’t want to go. Some will describe it as anxiousness, others as an uncomfortable feeling. Let’s face it, none of us like it when someone crosses the line.
People do cross the line, all the time. We don’t complain when they are invited, and we do open our hearts to the people that we welcome into our lives. But not every energy “transaction” with those around us is clear or supporting, sometimes they are manipulative or responses based on fear. Learning to set our boundaries in life can help us keep our relationships on that higher level of love instead of the reactive responses, and this serves those we love just as much as it serves us in us in maintaining our own energies.
Personal space and boundaries can be a cultural behavior as well. Not every culture practices “cueing”, waiting for your turn and standing in line. Nor does every culture respond to the invisible lines that we call our personal space. The key is to be understanding and not fight with our reactions, but be aware. With awareness, consciousness, we can maintain healthy and prosperous relationships while still maintaining our own personal boundaries.
