Step on a crack break your mothers back, step on a line look like Frankenstein! As a child, it would take me hours to walk to school as I was trying not to step on any lines so I wouldn’t look like Frankenstein.
Superstitions – we all have them and they come in many forms. Although, in reality these are urban legends, many people take them very seriously and will take all kinds of precautions not to break the rules. And gambling is no exception. Over the years many different superstitions have surfaced and gamblers have taken heed!
Some of the most common, and most frequently observed, are these :
1: Do not enter the casino through the front doors. Always use side entrances to ward off bad luck.
2: No fifty dollar bills. It is a long standing belief that the $50 bill brings bad luck with it.
3: Never count out how much money you have when playing table games. This is sure to bring you bad luck. Only count your money when you leave the table.
4: A famous superstition from Asia is that wearing the color red will bring you good luck.
There are many other types of superstitions and omens that gamblers consider good or bad luck including lucky charms. Some players will not leave the house without doing certain rituals or taking special items with them.
True story : I once saw a bingo playing friend of mine carrying a stuffed toy in the shape of a baby elephant. It was almost the same size as a baby elephant too! She always carried this same toy because she thought she couldn’t win without it.
Here are just a few of the weirder, more crazy superstitions that many players live their lives by and take extremely seriously.
1 : Lucky clothes is a very common one. Plenty of gamblers swear by this and will only play in their lucky dress or shirt.
2: Lucky meal, lipstick, shoes, socks, jewelry, etc. Don’t leave home without them.
3: Kissing the slot machine before pulling the level.
4: Counting – many players count up to a special, lucky number before spinning the reels of the slot machine they are playing. Some even drop their coins into the machine in a particular way.
Some superstitions arise from having a good day at the casino. The gambler will look at who was dealing, what they were wearing, how many coins they played on the slots, what they ate – anything that could have resulted in them winning.
There are so many different superstitions I believe we could write a book on this subject. But for all those out there who believe or don’t believe, play the games the way you feel most comfortable, if you feel like playing poker in your bathing suit because its lucky, then go right ahead, but remember, others may think that a person wearing a bathing suit at a poker table is BAD luck!
