Lotus Flowers – Their Intuitive Meaning

The lotus flower, with its delicate white petals resting so gracefully upon the water, has been revered as a symbol of spirituality for millenniums.  It was held sacred by Buddhist, Egyptian, Hindus, Chinese and Japanese, and has even been embraced by Christians as well.   The Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary holding the lotus flower, or the water lily, as a symbol of the unity of heaven and earth, or birth.

The Hindus consider the Lotus to be a symbol of the power of movement in nature.  Lotus flowers bring to gether fire and water, or spirit and matter.  The Lotus is shown growing from the navel of Vishnu, the god who “rests in the Waters of Space on the Serpent of Infinity”.  Lakshmi, the feminine manifestation of Vishnu, is also referred to as Padma, or Lotus.

Poet Sir Monier Williams stated so gracefully, “..Then, seated on a lotus, beauty’s bright Goddess, peerless Shri, arose out of the waves…”

As a symbol of birth, the replication of life and the creator, the lotus seed contains perfectly formed leaves before it even germinates.  This miniature representation shows what they will become someday, as perfected plants.  This concept is seen as well in the evolution of our life, evolving into the perfection from which we come.

In the Egyptian Book of the Dead the lotus was described as transformational.  “I am the pure Lotus, emerging from the Luminous Ones.  I carry the messages of Horus.  I am the pure Lotus which comes from the Solar Fields.”

Helena Blavatsky spoke of the lotus flower, saying “It is the flower sacred to nature and her Gods, and represents the Abstract and the Concrete Universes, standing as the emblem of the productive power of both Spiritual and Physical nature. “

The Lotus flower remains a symbol of life, unity, harmony, and the movement in life between matter and being.  At the very least we can derive from it recognition of our own empowerment in the yin and yang nature of the world.

Lotus Flower Healing techniques are included in the book Being Here Now, available in paperback and ebook formats.
