The Salt of the Earth – Luck and Life

Salt is one of the most important elements on this earth.  Our body depends on salt to regulate blood pressure and volume.  Salt is needed to extract acids from our body, especially in our brain.  When we talk about the electrical system within the human body, salt is necessary for producing the hydroelectric energy in cells, aiding in nerve cell communication and information processing in the brain.  It is a natural antihistamine, prevents leg cramps, and has a natural hypnotic affect, helping us regulate sleep.  The list goes on, and it is clear that salt in itself is magical.

Salt has been mined throughout the world, and throughout time it has been treasured and highly traded.  In the bible Jesus spoke of the value of his disciples by saying, “You are the salt of the earth”.

In ancient times salt was added to sacrifices.  Pagans thought salt to have redemptive power.  During invocations salt wass thrown on the ground to ward off unfriendly spirits.

In the Jewish culture it was considered a sign of hospitality to break bread with a stranger, with the bread first dipped in salt.

Spilling salt at the table is considered to be unlucky.  The spell of bad luck can be quickly and easily dispatched by picking up a pinch of the salt and throwing it over your left shoulder.

What about the quantity of salt in our food?  It was once believed that when too much salt is added to food while preparing, it is a sign that the cook is in love.

Salt has been used by many cultures for cleansing, healing, and blessing.  Salt baths, whether it is sea salts or epsom salts, can be rejuvenating in many ways. Salt removes negative and dark energies from the body when combined with prayer or intentions.

Gemstones and crystals are cleansed and cleared of negative energies using salt, such as a salt bath, laying the crystal on a bed of salt, or burying the crystal in salt.  A pendulum or muscle testing is a useful tool to determine when the crystal is cleared.  Use caution though, some stones and gems will be harmed by a salt bath.

In the art of Feng Shui salt is used to clear the effects of negative energy.  You can mop your house with salt water, or place a crystal bowl with salt crystals over your toilet or on a windowsill.  In Ayurveda medicine warm salt water is consumed to detoxify and heal the body.

This is just a sampling of the history, beliefs, and values of salt.  This article is not intended to prescribe or advise.  As with anything in life, take it with a grain of salt.
