Polarity In Tantra

One of the main principles in the philosophy of Tantra is polarity which states that the universe consists of Shiva and Shakti. Shiva is the masculine principle (Yang) and Shakti is the feminine principle (Yin).

The masculine represents the transcendent aspects of the universe: The consciousness, the spirit, the world of ideas, while the feminine represents the imminent aspect of the universe: The material, the body, nature, our moods, life itself.

If there is Shakti with no Shiva chaos will prevail as there is no master plan. If there is Shiva with no Shakti the universe would not exist.

Shiva and Shakti dance together in a complex and beautiful dance which creates the universe, keeps it together and destroys it.

This dance exists on all levels of cosmos. For example on the cosmic scale, huge galaxies (Shakti) revolve around points in space, black holes (Shiva), singularities in space time.

Polarity exists in the couple relationship where the man embodies Shiva and the woman embodies Shakti. Polarity exists within us, our bodies, emotions and mental activity are Shakti while the spark of consciousness and awareness within us is Shiva.

Shiva is the spark of consciousness and Shakti is the energy. Shiva is like a mirror who reflects Shakti so she can become aware of herself.

The Theory Of Resonance

Resonance is a fundamental law of the universe. The universe is pulsating energy (Shakti) covering an infinite scope of vibration.

Resonance states that energy which pulsates with the same wave length will attract other energies vibrating with the same frequency (the law of attraction).

An energetic system which vibrates with a certain frequency will automatically start transferring information from another system vibrating in the same frequency.

E.g. if you are happy you will transfer data from other systems which have “happy energy”. You will transfer data from all the people that ever were happy and transmitted happy energy into the universe.

A specific resonance of happiness can be transferred through different media. Music can give you that specific state of happiness, or a certain colour could do the same thing.

We should therefor be very careful with which resonances we allow into our being. Listening to heavy metal for instance will put you in resonance with all the people that ever listened to heavy metal and as experiments with plants show, it is not an energy which is very conducive to life.

If you want to delve in negative energies you have to have a consciousness principle (Shiva) which is strong enough to be in it and not be consumed by it, but merely reflect it (this is only a path for those who are very strong such as the Agora tantrics from India).

For the rest of us we should rather concentrate on what is good and noble and download those energies into our being!

The Tantric Pantheon

Tantrics study and worship Shakti in order to get to the Shiva (essence) behind the Shakti. In their studies they have categorized the world into a large family of Gods and Goddesses. Each deity has a specific vibration or resonance and represents a certain aspect of the universe.

For example the energy of compassion has a specific frequency of vibration. In the west we would call it compassion and we do not see the need to have it represented by a Goddess.

But deifying an energy has an important function: It enables us to identify easier with the energy as it gains a human face. It is easier to digest and to take in.

Through identifying with an object you can reach a full understanding of it as you “put yourself in its shoes”.

Each Goddess has a Bija, a vibration which is the essence of that Goddess/energy. This Bija exists within the mantra of that Goddess.

A mantra is a sound which can be repeated internally by the meditator in his worship of the Goddess and is the closest physical representation we have to the bija of the Goddess.

The word Tantra in fact means “Network” as the universe consists of a huge range of energies interconnected to each other. Tantra offers us the opportunity of going into resonance processes with all these energies through its pantheon of Gods and Goddesses and their associated Mantras.

In this way we can identify with any aspect of the universe through mantras and resonance.

Tantra and Music

Music offers us a powerful way of getting into a resonance process.

A composer who makes a piece of music under the influence of a certain resonance will convey this resonance to the listener in a very powerful and direct way.

It is in the artists interest to choose which energy he wants his audience to feel, because it enables him to consciously “soak” himself in that energy while creating his artwork and to transmit it to his audience through resonance.

In this way the artist can be a priest, a person who through his spiritual practice vibrates with the Bija and who can convey it to other people through the music.
