Most of us have heard of Buddhism, but what exactly does it mean?
The founder of Buddhism, called Buddha, Gautama, and Sakyamuni, lived about 500 years before the birth of Christ. He was the son of a king of Magadha (the modern Behar), and is said to have lived, for some time, a life of secular pursuits and pleasures. One day he was struck with a change in his thinking about the vanity of man and all earthly things. He renounced his prospects and became an ascetic (the practice of rigorous self-discipline).
