The end of all Hindu philosophy is to attain to right apprehension. This is the only means to be released from the misery of transmigration, of which ignorance is believed to be the cause. What is apprehension? For most of us we understand the meaning: fear. But Apprehension has another meaning, and that is understanding. To understand to the fullest.
Through ignorance, the soul, which has existed from everlasting, and is distinct from the mind, the senses, and the body, identifies itself with them.
We live in this perspective that our soul conceives some things as its own, and view other things as belonging to others.
Through the body we receive pleasure from the object of our attention, and pain from that awareness as well. Hence it arises in it desire for that which gives pleasure, and aversion from the things that produce pain. By the reasoning of desire and aversion, we engage in various good and evil doings. Karma and life lessons are accrued by the demerit and merit of our actions and beliefs.
To receive requital, it has to pass to Elysium, or Hell, but even the happiness that is enjoyed in Elysium is not all that favorable. When the value of good works is exhausted, then the soul must again assume a body, and again be thrust to birth and death cycle yet again.
In order to avoid the continual birth and death cycle one must free themselves from the supposed laws of karma and never-ending cycle. This shift is achieved by studying the philosophies; clearing the heart and mind; and practicing the act of good works i.e. stepping out of the karmic ways. The thought processes that allow “an eye for an eye” and the study of Sastras, or the studies of philosophical interests, cannot reside in the same mind and find successful release from transmigration of the soul.
