Yin and Yang in the eyes of Confucius

The book of Yih King says, “In the changes of the world there is Great Supreme which produces two principles, and these two principles are Yin and Yang.”

What exactly is meant by the word “Supreme”? Are we speaking of a higher presence, as in a Creator or Supreme Being? The word supreme also carries the definition of “ultimate”. So when we bring this change in to the earlier statement, we can see that no matter where we turn we are always under the influence of Yin and Yang.

Yin and Yang, and the five elements act and react upon each others in never ending movement. We have the magnetic opposites of attraction and repulsion.

It is within the thin layer of earth which we inhabit that we have the beauty of yin and yang. Spirit alone does not possess sound, or touch, or taste. When Yin and Yang unite they produce the five elements: fire, wood, water, metal and earth.

When the five elements work in harmony we have the four seasons, flowing seamlessly within their cycle. Bring in the essence of the infinate and we have body and spirit, and through their interaction all things are produced, reproduced, and developed with no end.

Through our Yin and Yang movement we have choice and direction. Since the body comes from Yin and the soul comes from Yang we cannot achieve perfection. We have our material nature, with desire and passion, not so far removed from the beast. Confucius says, “Men’s nature is originally alike, but in practice men become very different.”
