A mantra is a sequence of sounds. These sounds are vibrations. When you are chanting, whether loud or low, or in silent repetition, you are setting up a specific series of vibrations.
The forms that are created by a mantra depends on the notes on which the mantra is chanted; the mantra, when chanted, give rise to a series of forms in a subtle energy matter. The nature of the vibrations, that is, their general character, whether constructive or destructive, whether stimulating love, energy, or other emotions, depends on the words of the mantra.
To produce the desired vibration a mantra must be recited in its original Sanskrit form. In addition, it must be chanted a certain number of times, a magical number, or else their effect is considerably less. If you recite them properly they have marvelous effects.
The vibrations of the mantras in the subtle matter that surrounds us are like waves that wash up against the body of the preta washing away the coarser matter, and quickening the disintegration of the preta form. The water poured out with mantras and magnetized by them imparts its helpful magnetism to the preta form also.
